No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
